A widget is a small piece of Web programming code that gives a user an interesting, and often informative, plug-in for use on a blog, wiki, social networking profile, or Web page. A widget may feature information that gets automatic updates--weekly or even daily, for instance. Or, a widget may offer the Web user with a helpful search tool.
The first three widgets listed below—Make a Pledge Flag, Take Care of Texas Banner Ad and Countdown to Earth Day—can be embedded on your Facebook and MySpace pages. To place a widget on your Facebook page, simply click the “Share on Facebook” button beneath the widget image. If you use an Apple Macintosh computer with operating system 10.5 Leopard or later, you can still use the Safari browser to add "web clip" widgets to your dashboard. Open Safari and go to the Web page that has the widget (or other Web page section you want). Pull down the "File" menu and stop on "Open in Dashboard."
